Derek Mackay

Derek Mackay ( born July 30, 1977 in Renfrew ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party ( SNP).

Life

Mackay attended the Kirklandneuk Primary School and the Renfrew High School. Then he studied at the University of Glasgow, but abandoned his studies to devote himself to politics. Mackay is married and a father of two.

Political career

1994 Mackay joined the SNP. In the regional elections in Renfrewshire in 1999, he ran for the first time and won a mandate. Thus he became the youngest male member of the Council of Scotland. In the following two elections Mackay was confirmed and chaired the Council from 2007. Between 2003 and 2005 he also assisted the SNP MPs Bruce McFee. In the 2011 parliamentary elections Mackay first came to elections at the national level. In his constituency Renfrewshire North and West, he won the direct mandate before the candidate of the Labour Party and moved for the first time in the Scottish Parliament. In December 2011, Mackay took over from his party colleague Aileen Campbell, the position of Secretary of State for Local Government and Planning.
