Deriner Dam

The Deriner dam on the river Çoruh in northeastern Turkey, near the border with Georgia, is a arch dam, which is used to generate electricity. It is located five kilometers from the town of Artvin. The reservoir is around 70 km long and has a water surface with full back of 26.4 km ².

Dam

The dam, a double-curved arch dam is the highest dam in Turkey and one of the 10 highest in the world. Their height is variously given as 247, 249 or 253 m above the foundation level.

The hydropower plant will cover a large part of Turkey's energy needs in the future. The four Francis turbines produce with a power of 4 times 167.5 = 670 MW per year. If the reservoir is flooded they produce about 2118 gigawatt hours per year. The hydropower plant is located underground in a cavern. During the construction of the dam 3,200,000 m³ of concrete was required. ( According to other calculations, there are 3,500,000 m³. ) To its transport to the construction site was used cable cranes that spanned several hundred meters wide and deep canyon.

The planning of the project lasted from 1988 to 1991, the construction period should be from 1998 to 2006, but was delayed until 2012. Since February 2013, the dam is operational.

On Çoruh there are upstream nor the Artvin Dam and downstream of the dam Borçka.

Spillway

The dimensions of the Spillway are:

  • Length of the distributor adit: 937.14 m
  • Diameter of the manifold stud ( outside / inside): 14 m / 11.6 m
  • Performance of the distribution tunnel: 1,804 m³ / s
  • Spillway: 2 overflows with 2,250 m³ / s, 8 outlets with 7,000 m³ / s ( together 9,250 m³ / s)
  • Tunnel lengths of the spillway: Tunnel I: 420.86 m, tunnel II: 446.60 m
  • Diameter of the tunnel: 8 m
