Dervish Hima

Dervish Hima ( born Ibrahim Naxhi; * 1872 in Ohrid, Ottoman Empire, † May 21, 1928 in Tirana, Albania). Was an Albanian politician, publicist, journalist, diplomat and co-signer of the Declaration of Independence of Albania in Vlora on November 28, 1912 He was an important figure of the Albanian national movement Rilindja.

Life

Dervish Hima completed the primary school in Ohrid to continue in Thessaloniki to attend secondary school. Later, he registered at the Military Medical Academy in Istanbul, but had to interrupt his studies because of political reasons after two years. Hima wrote at this time much critical to reigning Sultan Abdulhamid II and was involved in the liberation of Albanian territories from Ottoman rule. That's why he is one of the important figures of Rilindja, the Albanian national movement. But he also supported the rapprochement between the Macedonian and Albanian resistance fighters ( Chetnik ) against the Serbian conquerors during the Ohrid Debar Uprising 1913.

1908 Hima was arrested in Shkodra by Ottoman police authorities for a speech to the Albanian autonomy.

During the 1919 Paris Peace Conference Hima criticized in his writings, the great powers for their " conquest appetite ".

On May 21, 1928 Dervish Hima died in Tirana.
