Descartes (Indre-et-Loire)

Descartes is a municipality with 3805 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in France in the Indre- et- Loire in the Centre region.

The town was originally called La Haye en Touraine. Here the philosopher and mathematician René Descartes was born on March 31, 1596. In 1802 it was renamed La Haye, Descartes, and 1967 - after the merger with Balesme - in its present name. In Descartes 's birthplace is now a museum on the square stands a monument of the 19th century.
