Désirée Artôt

Désirée Artôt de Padilla (* July 16, 1835 in Paris, † April 3, 1907 in Berlin or Vienna; native Montageney ) was an opera singer in the vocal range mezzo- soprano.

Life

Désirée Artôt was of Belgian origin and a pupil of Pauline Viardot -Garcia. She debuted in 1857 in Brussels and a year later was employed at the Grand Opera at Paris, then at La Scala in Milan. In December 1859 came from there to Berlin and took part in an engagement at the newly formed Italian Opera at the Victoria Theatre. There they remained until 1861.

In the following years she was in the leading opera houses throughout Europe as a guest.

1868 love the Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky in it. Their planned wedding, but was thwarted by her mother and friends of the composer. In 1869 she married the Spanish baritone Mariano Padilla y Ramos. From this marriage the daughter Dolores de Padilla came out that made under the name Lola Artôt de Padilla career as a soprano of the Berlin Court Opera ( 1909-1927 ).
