Destour

The Destur Party (French Destour ) was a Tunisian political party that was founded on 4 June 1920 by the local ruling class during the French Protectorate.

The aim of the party was to achieve the liberation of the former Ottoman province of Tunisia from French colonial control.

The party name Destur is usually translated as constitutionalism, who was a political program of the party. The term is probably of Persian origin - handed down by the presence of the Turkish rulers in North Africa from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. There is no tradition of this word from the Arab period - spoken " during the pre-Islamic period" - neither in the Qur'an nor in the Hadith nor in Arabic literature during the period before the Ottoman rule in Egypt and Tunisia. In the Kurdish language Kurmanji Destur the word " permit " means.

The party split in 1934. From the modernist - secularist wing neo- Destur Party, which campaigned for a separation between state and religion was born. In 1964 Destur Party and Neo - Destour party were re-organized in the Socialist Unity Party Destur party of the president Habib Bourguiba.
