Developmental disability

With development impairment is meant that the viability and development opportunities of people are affected due to certain reasons. The reasons may lie in the somatic or psychic realm. But you can also lie in the social field, the affected people or the environment. Here, this term generally excludes the terms of the ( impaired ) activity and participation of people to, like this one in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF ) are defined by the World Health Organization (WHO ) (see ICF 2004. 94ff ).

In contrast to the terms " disabled / r" or " person with disability", the term " person with developmental impairment " for the cause of a holistic view of man and his development. This term is the view and the knowledge that each person develops a lifetime, in various physical, mental and spiritual and social processes. This lifelong development is common to all men, it can not be stopped, regardless of whether someone is, for example, has a physical injury or is impaired in its perception. It is important in a development that this always takes place in the interaction of a person with himself and the environment.

According to the concept development impairment, the term " heavy or heavier development impairment," the fact that the viability or opportunities of people are severely affected. This may be the cause that several central dimensions of development are affected ( for example, the musculoskeletal system, cognition, perception, or language ) for specific damage and that, accordingly, the potential for development of a person is greatly reduced. It is possible that a person was impaired in its development due to specific disabilities and the consequent participation restrictions. It is undisputed that severe developmental impairments cause a substantial need for assistance (see Oberholzer, 2005: 48f. ).
