Devín Gate

The Hainburger gate or (especially in Slovakia) the Theban gate ( slovak: Devínska brána ) and can also currently Bratislava Gate ( slovak: Bratislavská brána ), formerly Hungarian Gates (Latin Porta Hungarica ), is a short transverse valley of the Danube between the foothills of the Eastern Alps and the Small Carpathians - between the Hundsheimer mountain in Austria and the castle of Thebes or the Bratislava castle in Slovakia.

The current tightness is located near the border triangle of Austria - Slovakia -Hungary and has always been an important transportation hub. Here the route crosses along the Danube - the dominant power in Central Europe - the so-called Amber Road, which connects the Mediterranean with Northern Europe.

Strategic importance had Hainburger gate already in the Roman period and the subsequent mass migrations, where it was guarded by the various powers each. Such was already among the Celts a Wallburg on Brown Mountain. In the Middle Ages, fortified by the town of Hainburg and about enthroned Castle and Devin Castle was the defensive line. In recent history, it was a part of the Iron Curtain. Coming from the Alps and the Danube wetlands in broad Vienna Basin ago, the river bed narrows to about 200 meters and flows at the foot of Hainburg Mountains ( steep slope of Hundsheimer mountain, 480 m) in a right turn at the cut bank of the Little Carpathians past ( Slovak Devinska Kobyla ( Thebener Kogel ), 514 m) and in the level of Bratislava.
