Dewey Read More Books ( November 1987 *, † 29 November 2006) was the library cat of Spencer Public Library (Iowa).

Life

On the night of 18 January 1988 an eight -week-old kitten from an unknown person was forced through the flap of Buchrückgabebox the city library of Spencer. Staff of the library found the animal in the morning cold damaged but still alive between the returned books and took care of him. The director Vicki Myron convinced the library committee to keep the little rotgetigerten hangover as a library cat. Soon after, the first article about the animal in the Spencer Daily Reporter and a competition for the final choice of name for the time being " Dewey " said animal appeared to be involved 397 people, which was a very high rate compared to the usual number of participants of library competitions. The name " Dewey " (after 1873 developed and commonly used in American libraries by Melvil Dewey Dewey Decimal Classification ) sat through it and was replaced by another name " Read More" after the cartoon character OG Read More and "Books " adds the delineation of this same figure. In addition, the name is a play on words ( " read more books" = " read more books ").

In the following years, Dewey was known by numerous press and TV reports. Among others traveled in 2003 a Japanese television crew to Iowa to film Dewey. Since the summer of 2004, the homepage of the library then recorded numerous hits from Japan; 150,000 clicks within three years were registered.

Vicki Myron wrote two adults and several children's books about the cat, who spent most of his life in the library in Spencer. In October 2006, was discussed at a meeting of the Library Board about the aged animal, which now allegedly harmed the image of the library, abolish or put to sleep, but this was not carried out. However, in late November 2006, a veterinarian an aggressive stomach tumor solid at the about 19 -year-old male. Dewey was euthanized, cremated and later buried near the library. His grave was later with a plate with the inscription " In Loving Memory of Dewey Read More Books: World Famous Library Cat" provided. In the library recalls a bronze sculpture by Heather Beary to the hangover.
