Dhoti

The Dhoti (Hindi, f, धोटी, dhoti ) is the traditional dress of Indian men leg. The dhoti is the counterpart of the sari for women. It consists of a long piece of cloth, usually thin cotton or, more recently synthetic, which is knotted at the waist and then wrapped around the legs like pants. A well-known in the West as a carrier dhotis was Mahatma Gandhi.

From the urban middle class of the dhoti is now mainly worn during religious occasions, usually together with the kurta, a collarless, lightweight shirt. For men poorer population groups, however, it is an everyday garment ( it only costs a fraction of a cheap trousers ), men of the older generation do not want to do without this typical Indian garb. To meet the needs of the often extreme climate Indian dhoti is a better than even the lightweight trousers.

Today in Western-oriented circles wearing the dhoti is often regarded as a sign of backwardness. In the male business world of the middle class, are worn exclusively western clothes. Politicians, however, appear in public often in dhotis on, usually in combination with a jacket with high collar or a sleeveless vest. Prime Minister such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his successor Manmohan Singh is seen in the media very often in dhoti.

The dhoti symbolized in a way, the Indian and conservative element.
