Dhul-Nun al-Misri

Dhu n- Well, actually, Abu al - Faid Thauban ibn Ibrahim / أبو الفيض ثوبان بن إبراهيم / Abū al - Faid Tauban b. Ibrāhīm (* 796 in Akhmim, † 859), was a Sufi ( Islamic mystic ) from Egypt, so he is often Dhu n -Nun al - Misri / ذو النون المصري / You n -Nun al - Misri /, Dhu n -Nun the Egyptian ' called. His parents were Nubians from Upper Egypt.

The epithet Dhu n -Nun means "the one with the fish ." He was not only revered as a mystic, but also accused of being a magician, because he is said to have written books on alchemy. Around the year 840 it was fuzzy imprisoned during the persecution of the " Old Believers " in Baghdad.

Through his poetic prayers he introduced a new style into the grave and ascetic piety of that Sufis. He heard - the Koranic word faithfully - from all created things praise God, and thus influenced the later descriptions of nature Persian and Turkish Sufis.

Dhu n -Nun also be attributed to some definitions of Ma'rifa ( knowledge of God ).

A well-known anecdote from his life tells that he is quoted as saying in the search of Muslim saints after the biggest names of God: " Show me the smallest! "
