Dhünn

The Dhünn at Leverkusen

The Dhünn is a 40.02 km long, orographic left or southern tributary of the river Wupper. It rises in the Bergische Land and joins Leverkusen into the Wupper, just before it empties itself into the Rhine. It is the longest tributary of the river Wupper and flows through the Oberbergisch district, the Rheinisch- Bergisch district and the district-free city of Leverkusen. In April 2010, the Dhünn was declared the first "barrier- free flow " in North Rhine -Westphalia.

Source areas

The Dhünn has two spring arms.

A longer source river, called Great Dhünn, rises near the two villages Wipperfürther Peddenpohl and Ritz Haufe, flows through a straight line whose wooded stream valley, takes on the Purder Bach and the Bach mouse and is jammed in the pre-dam Large Dhünn the Great Dhünn dam.

A shorter arm, called Small Dhünn, rises near Hückeswagen - Dörpfeld at the Wermelskirchener border, flows through the town Dhünn and is jammed in the pre-dam Small Dhünn the Great Dhünn dam.

Course of Dhünn

After the two spring arms have united in the Great Dhünn dam, they flow as Dhünn Altenberg and Odenthal to Leverkusen.

Previously, the water power was used at the river often. Meanwhile, all dams were built back below the Great Dhünn dam.

After various maps an arm of the Dhünn culminated earlier obviously directly into the Rhine. The arm on the Wupper was folded a few meters in the 19th century and flows since just before the (Rhine ) flows into the Wupper, while the Rhein- arm no longer exists. From 1910 took place embankments. Between 1968 and 1971 the river was changed again to make room for the Bayer landfill. Today the Dhünn flows north in Leverkusen -Rhine village in the Wupper. A few years ago the Dhünn was renatured in a longer section in Leverkusen.

Renaturation

The Dhünn was declared the first "barrier- free flow " in North Rhine -Westphalia By laying the Dhünn to the weir of the scythe hammer around in April 2010. This means that the 24 -kilometer stretch of water from the Dhünn estuary is freely accessible again to the dam of the Great Dhünn Dam for fish and small animals. The fish can pass unhindered to their spawning grounds in the river system and its tributaries the Dhünn.

The Dhünn Duna as the Nibelungen saga

After the controversial thesis of the scholar Heinz Ritter - Schaumburg is the Dhünn - not the Danube - equated with the Duna of the Nibelungen saga. He points out that the Dhünn a hundred and fifty years ago led to the river before it was diverted into the adjacent river Wupper. Around 1190 it was known under the name Dune. With the old Duna can be meant in his opinion, only these Dune, today Dhünn. Knight relies on the Thidrekssaga. His conclusions are rejected by most specialists, although they have some amazing results.
