Dhutanga

Dhutanga ( Pali, literally " fining agents " in Thai: ธุดงค์ - Thudong ) is a group of thirteen ascetic " exercises " that are most frequently observed by the so-called forest monks of the Buddhist Theravada tradition (see: Thai forest tradition ).

Nevertheless Although the Buddha has spoken out against a self-flagellation as a means of attaining enlightenment, he encouraged the monks, some ascetic practices, which he described as Dhutanga to perform to cumbersome attachments - such as laziness, sloth, pride and hubris - convert in simplicity, humility, restraint, vigilance.

In the sutras are indeed here and there one way or another exercise mentioned, but nowhere are the following 13 exercises together in one place. Only Buddhaghosa she has Visuddhi - Magga summarized (ref.: Nyanatikloka, 1999):

Of these 13 exercises like one or more to be practiced for a short or longer period.

"For the practicing himself in morality should take the ascetic purification practices as a vow on them in order to obtain those virtues such as frugality, frugality, etc., by which the purification of the above discussed morality comes about. For thus purely flushed through the water such virtues as frugality, frugality, Entsagungsstrenge, Solitude, willpower, temperance, etc. of stains, his morality will attain perfect sincerity, ...
