Diacerein is the international non-proprietary name for the drug 1,8 -diacetoxy -3- carboxy anthraquinone. Diacerein anti-inflammatory properties as an inhibitor of the cytokine interleukin -1 and is used as an active ingredient in some countries for the treatment of osteoarthrosis. A recent study showed a slight, compared with a placebo significant, reduction of pain in the hip joint arthrosis.

Diacerein is diacetylated Rhine (see name), a anthranoid of medicinal rhubarb root. The prodrug of diacerein is deacetylisiert in the liver to the Rhine and excreted 30 % via the kidneys. Unwanted side effects are observed especially in the gastrointestinal tract, the drug can lead to diarrhea.
