Brown Erdeule ( Diarsia brunnea )

The Brown Erdeule ( Diarsia brunnea ), and Brown Staudenflureule or Rotgefranste Erdeule called, is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of cutworms ( Noctuidae ).

Features

Butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 36-45 millimeters. As for the color structure, they do not show great variability. The front wings are strong reddish brown in color and partially with a purple coat. There is a large black spot between the ring and kidney blemish. While the ring stain appear in the color, the kidneys often show flaws yellowish tints. Too small black dots Zapf stigma is reduced. Transverse and wavy lines usually have a vague training. The Saumfeld is slightly brighter. The hind wings are without markings light brown gray.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The egg is spherical, flattened at the base, ribbed thin and colored ash. The caterpillars are tinted dark brown, have whitish colored back, side back and side lines and dark slashes. On the eleventh segment is a characteristic, thick, yellow white stripe across the back. The red-brown doll is characterized by two long, curved and four shorter spines on the cremaster.

Similar Species

A certain similarity to Primrose Erdeule ( Diarsia mendica ), but in which predominate yellow-brown or bright red-brown hues. The plantain Erdeule ( Diarsia rubi ), the bog meadows Erdeule ( Diarsia dahlii ) and Diarsia florida and Diarsia guadarramensis are all drawn less contrast, they lack violet tints and the moths are smaller.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is found throughout most of Europe. Eastwards ranges the spread to central and southern China, and Japan. East Asian individuals belong to ssp. urupina. The Primrose Erdeule inhabited preferably deciduous mixed and coniferous forests, heaths, raised bogs and parklands.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths fly mainly from June to August in one generation a year. Visit artificial light sources as well as bait, and occasionally the flowers of the ordinary black cherry ( Prunus padus ), the flutter - rush ( Juncus effusus ) or of dwarf elder (Sambucus ebulus ). The caterpillars are found from September. They feed on a wide variety of plants, for example by:

  • Männerfarn ( Dryopteris filix- mas ).
  • Forest - Wood-rush ( Luzula sylvatica),
  • Wire Schmiele ( Deschampsia flexuosa ),
  • Forest Zwenke ( Brachypodium sylvaticum ),
  • Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus),
  • Bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum ),
  • Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa),
  • Primroses (Primula ) and of

Raspberry (Rubus ), nettle (Urtica ), willow ( Salix), birch (Betula ), sorrel ( Rumex ) and star Mier species ( Stellaria ). They overwinter and pupate in May of the following year in a hole in the ground.

Endangering

The Brown Erdeule comes in all federal states in Germany numerous times before and is out on the red list of threatened species as not at risk.
