Diawling-Nationalpark

The Diawling National Park is a national park located in the extreme southwest of Mauritania in the administrative region Trarza on the border with Senegal. It comprises the delta of the Senegal River Valley in the rainy season it consists mostly of larger lakes.

The Diawling Park was established in 1991, since 1994 he is a Ramsar site. It is located in the district ( Moughataa ) Keur Massène. The wetland covers an area of ​​16,000 hectares, added a border zone of 30,000 hectares of sand dunes and mangrove belt. The nearest villages are Keur Massène in the north and in the south Ndiago. The park is surrounded by a total of 21 villages whose population was given in 2005 with 19,000.

The National Park since 2005, together with the Senegalese World Heritage National Park Djoudj part of a transboundary biosphere reserve. After the annual census of Jan 2010 lived in the park 105 species - including 92 species of waterfowl - and 237 755 individuals of birds - over 136 368 birds in 2009, when the climatic and hydrological conditions were poor - including pelican, Black stork and flamingo. Further, there are a variety of fish and primates, significant populations of pigs or warts.

In the area of ​​national parks live members of the Wolof and Fulani. The capital of the administrative region Trarza, Rosso, located further upstream on the Senegal. The only other national park in the country is the National Park Banc d' Arguin, another important habitat for migratory birds in Mauritania is the Lac d' Aleg.
