Diceware

Diceware is a simple method, safe and easy erinnerbare passwords and passphrases using a cube to produce.

To create a passphrase several words are selected from a specific list of words and concatenated. The words are by means of a cube, which serves here as a random number generator determined. For each word five dice rolls are needed to serve their eyes as digits of a five digit number sixfold, for example 43142nd basis of this figure is selected, the associated word from the word list. In the German word list corresponds to 43142 remember the word. Currently, there are word lists for the languages ​​Chinese, German, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish and Swedish.

Despite the great length of the passphrase you can remember them well because the individual words can be memorized as units. The number of words in a passphrase depends on the desired security.

Example

It is important that the meaning of the individual words is known, or they are connected by an improvised story.

Security calculation

One advantage of the Diceware method is that the predictability of passphrases can be easily calculated. For other methods of password generation the safety of passphrases generated can often not be determined. Each Diceware word adds bit entropy added to a passphrase. So five words corresponding to more than 64 bits.

Disadvantage
