Dick MacNeill

Richard " Dick" MacNeill ( born January 7, 1898 in Pasuruan, Dutch East Indies, † June 3, 1963 in Heemstede ) was a Dutch football goalkeeper. He played for HVV Den Haag and in 1920 in seven matches of the Dutch national team goalkeeper.

Macneills international career began after his predecessor in the Dutch goal, Just Göbel, an eye injury had closed and had to wear glasses. Göbel withdrew it from the active competition, and MacNeill could make his debut in Oranje on April 5, 1920. In the friendly against Denmark in Amsterdam he kept his goal clean, the Dutch won 2-0. MacNeill was appointed to the squad for the Olympic Games in Antwerp. He was in all the games in goal for the Netherlands. The Oranje lost the semi-final against hosts Belgium with 0:3, but was allowed because the Czechoslovaks were disqualified after the aborted final against Belgium, play against Spain for second place. After a 1-3 defeat, the Dutch were able to take the bronze medal with the short journey home. The next international match was not held until half a year later; MacNeill no longer stood in the squad, Henk van Tilburg took over the place in the Orange Gate.
