Diedrich Uhlhorn

Diedrich Uhlhorn ( born June 3, 1764 in Bockhorn, † October 5, 1837 in Grevenbroich ) was a German inventor and designer. He is the inventor of the toggle press for stamping of coins and medals, which he built in 1817 in Grevenbroich and their embossing process for coins up to now is the normal procedure.

Life and work

On June 3, 1764 Diedrich was born as the first son of Christian Gerhard Uhlhorn and Wübke Katharine of relieving in Bockhorn. Diedrich was an apt pupil and was interested in early for physics and mathematics. For this reason, his interest was apparently greater for the production of technical consumer goods than for his father's carpentry firm. Inevitably it had to come to a dispute between him and his father, so that Diedrich had to go his own way and a small workshop for physical and mathematical instruments operating in Bockhorn.

1797 Uhlhorn built a telescope for the Duke of Oldenburg, Peter Friedrich Ludwig, who thanked him with an annual pension of 150 Reichstalern Uhlhorn and in the same year appointed Herzoglich -Holstein - Oldenburg court mechanic.

1800 undertook Diedrich his first trip to the Rhineland Industrial area to set up the first after Uhlhorn cloth shearing machine for the merchant JW Thomas in Hückeswagen.

In 1801 he moved his residence from Bockhorn near the state capital of Oldenburg to use the variety of artisans working for part of its equipment and educational institutions for scientific study better.

In 1810 he moved with his family to Grevenbroich and became technical director of the spinning of Friedrich Koch. Incidentally Uhlhorn still operated a workshop for textile machinery " Uhlhorn & Thomas". 1812 founded Diedrich Uhlhorn scratching the factory " Dch. Uhlhorn, " who worked primarily with self-constructed machines.

In 1817 Diedrich Uhlhorn invented the toggle press. 1818 his invention was featured in Dusseldorf in 1820 and used at the Berlin mint.

1822 awarded him the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III. for his services, the general decorations of the Red Eagle Order.

In 1824 he transferred the factory scratching his two surviving sons from his first marriage, Christian and Gerhard, and devoted himself with his youngest son, Johann Heinrich the production of coin minting machines. The "Workshop for minting machines " has been completely taken over by Uhlhorns death of Johann Heinrich.

Diedrich Uhlhorn died at the age of 73 years on October 5, 1837 in Grevenbroich.

Family

On August 31, 1794, he married Margaret Schwoon gift. From this connection were four sons ( Christian 1795, Gerhard 1797, Diedrich 1800, Heinrich 1801) and a daughter ( Catherine Gifts 1803) produced. After the death of his first wife on July 8, 1803, he entered into a second marriage with Johanna Katharina Kläner on 13 January 1805. From this connection was received on November 25, 1805 as the only son out of the later of Commerce Johann Heinrich Uhlhorn.
