Diego Catalán

Diego Catalán ( born September 16, 1928 in Madrid, † April 9, 2008 in Madrid) was a Spanish linguist, Hispanist and medievalist.

Life and work

Diego Catalán was the grandson of the eminent Ramón Menéndez Pidal Romanists and the son of Jimena Menéndez Pidal Goyri educator (1901-1990) and the chemist Miguel Catalán Sañudo ( 1894-1957 ). At the age of eight he moved with his family from Madrid to Segovia and lived there until 1944 as the only student in his parents and grandfather in an atmosphere of rare spirituality. From 1944 to 1949 he studied at the University Complutense in Rafael Lapesa Romance Philology, always in contact with his withdrawn for political reasons living grandfather, whose life's work he was constantly accompanied and its scientific heritage, he ( after his death in 1968) was responsible for forty years.

In 1951 he received his doctorate in Lapesa with the work " Cronica de Alfonso XI ". Una redacción amplia desconocida. After a short proofreading in Edinburgh (1951-1952) he was an assistant in Madrid. From 1954 to 1964 he occupied at the University of La Laguna in Tenerife the chair of historical grammar, but left the island for numerous visiting professorships at Berkeley, Madison and Bonn ( there from 1963 to 1964 ). In 1965, he went completely in the United States and taught at Berkeley, Madison and San Diego ( there from 1970 to 1988 ). After 1979 his application failed to the Chair of Rafael Lapesa at the Complutense in Madrid, he took over from 1981 until his retirement in 1998 a professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid.

In Catalans scientific work is to distinguish between the ( extensive ) service at Heritage Menéndez Pidal and the ( also extensive ) own, with which he moved from the seventies, from philology to historical research. The Romancero research his grandfather led Catalán continuing through the editing and cataloging ( with others) of romance collections in numerous volumes. Currently, this still unfinished research, especially by Suzanne Petersen in the Internet project "Pan - Hispanic Ballad Project" is coordinated.

Significant was also the posthumous publication of Menéndez Pidals Spanish language history in 2 volumes (Madrid 2005).
