Dieter Krause

Dieter Krause ( born January 18, 1936 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) is a former German canoeist and sports official. He was in Rome in 1960 Olympic champion.

Krause had become 1953 and 1954 Youth Champion of the GDR. When he began his studies at the German University of Physical Culture ( DHfK ) in Leipzig, he joined the Sports Club of DHfK.

Overall, he won 1955-1965 23 DDR title. In 1958, he was with bronze over 500 meters, the first canoeist from East Germany, who won a World Championship medal. 1959, 1961 and 1963 he was European champion in four kayak.

At the Olympic Games in 1960 on the Lake Albano was once a 4x500 - meter relay in one kayak discharged ( which was replaced in 1964 by the four-man kayak). For this season, two canoeists were reported from the Federal Republic and with Günter Krause pearl mountain and two canoeists from the GDR with Friedhelm Wentzke and Paul Long. The squadron won gold and was the most successful all-German team. Together with Wolfgang Lange took Krause also in the double kayak over 500 meters eighth.

After his career, the trained qualified sports teacher worked as a trainer and as a sports official for the German Gymnastics and Sports Association. He was the last General Secretary of the East German Cycling Federation.
