Differdange

Differdange ( Luxembourgish Déifferdeng locally Déifferdang, French Differdange) is a city and a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It belongs to the canton of Esch -sur-Alzette. The city is located in the south of Luxembourg at the border with Belgium and France. Differdange is by the cities of Luxembourg and Esch -sur-Alzette, the third largest municipality in the country and has as a foreigner Esch share of over 50 percent.

The city is known mainly for its steel industry - Differdange is in the construction industry is a synonym for medium steel beams.

History

With the discovery of iron ore deposits and the associated iron and steel industry began to Differdange and the entire Minette region in the second half of the 19th century, the industrial boom. Initially, in mines, and later in the open pit, the Minette was mined and processed in the cottages. With the new jobs created, the population of the community grew rapidly. Initially, the workers from Luxembourg ( mainly from the Ösling ) came, but after a short time you had on workers from abroad to fall back. This came at the beginning of neighboring countries, later mainly from Portugal and Italy.

After the steel crisis of the 1970s, production was scaled back and many workers had to be laid off. Although the situation has improved in recent years, the Minette communities have to suffer to this day from the effects of the crisis.

In Differdange is a former blast furnace of Hadir, then since 1967 ARBED. This is where the world famous Grey carriers are rolled. Today it is operated by ArcelorMittal as electric steel plant.

As Differdingen steel beams are called mid-profile (IPE - shape steel beam ).

General strike from August 31, 1942

Church of Differdange

The church of Notre Dame de douleurs was built in 1954 and consecrated in 1955. The church organ was built by the Uergelmanufaktur George West fields.

Fond-de -Gras

Fond-de -Gras is a disused iron ore transfer station and is now part of the cultural inventory of Luxembourg. The former railway tracks and railway constructions are used today by the Heritage Railways " Train 1900 " and " Minièresbunn ". Giele Botter
