Bis (2- methoxyethyl) ether, commonly abbreviated as Diglyme (of diglycol dimethyl ether ), a high boiling organic solvent. It is an ether of diethylene glycol. It is a clear, colorless liquid and miscible with water, alcohols, and diethyl ether.
Use
Diglyme is mainly used in order to chelate as a solvent in organic reactions small cations, such that the anions are more reactive. Characterized Grignard reactions, for example, be carried out quickly and effectively. It also serves as Azeotropdestillationsmittel or entrainer and is contained in diesel fuels.
Safety
The vapors of diethylene glycol dimethyl ether can form ( 51 ° C, ignition temperature 190 ° C flash point) with air to form an explosive mixture.
