Diisobutyl phthalate is an organic chemical compound consisting of the group of the phthalates is used mainly as plasticizers. It is a colorless liquid with a very faint odor.
Production and representation
The technical production of diisobutylphthalate is carried out in a two-step synthesis of phthalic anhydride, and isobutanol. The first step is a rapid alcoholysis to Phthalsäurehalbester. The second esterification proceeds as an equilibrium reaction and requires the use of slower, and acid catalysts for conversion completion, the distillative removal of the water formed.
Properties
Physical Properties
Diisobutyl phthalate has a viscosity of 40-43 mPa · s and its vapors are 9.59 times heavier than air.
Chemical Properties
Diisobutylphthalate is very stable to light and heat. It has a lower density compared to dibutyl phthalate, and melting point, but has similar properties, such that it can be used as a substitute for it.
Use
Diisobutyl phthalate is widely used. So it is
- Odorless as plasticizers for plastics (PVC, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl butyral, cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate, ethyl cellulose, polyurethane, acrylics, chlorinated rubber, and nitrile rubber ), and for paints and adhesives, water-based polyvinyl acetate
- As additive ( with a content of 60 %) of a curing agent for unsaturated polyester resins Dibenzoylperoxidhaltigem
- As marking additive ( mixed with nonyl phenols ) of fuel oils for tax purposes
- For the preparation of titanium catalysts
- As support material for odor
- As an additive in hydraulic fluids and lubricants
- Indirectly in the food industry as flexibilising component in printing inks for food packaging.
