Diligence

The word comes from the German industriousness. Struggle zeal (or dispute ) and means Industrious determination. Diligence is considered so -called civic virtue.

For several decades, the word ( not the quality ) - as part of a general rejection of "bourgeois " secondary virtues - even negative connotations. Although hard work is certainly appreciated as a property of both privately and at work, sometimes you play them out against other gifts that are partially contrary ( such as intelligence or spontaneity ). In contrast, similar words (but equally important components of diligence as " industrious " or " determined " ) is less affected by this change in language use.

In many cases these easy pejorative view of industriousness is associated with " good behavior " in school or groups with " appropriateness ". Nevertheless, this kind of working or learning persistence in science is necessary, where the diligence not intelligence is " replaceable ". Diligence does not only mean, to work through some scientific dry spell through it, but to promote their own understanding through purposeful learning. This may for example include some repetitive activity - such as the memorization of phrases, poems or formulas. Memorizing important basic knowledge can not always be replaced by a pure desire to understand, the usually higher in the course is in our time as diligence.
