Dimitar Grekov

Dimitar Panayotov Grekow (Bulgarian: Димитър Панайотов Греков ) ( born 14 September 1847 in Bolhrad (Ukraine ); † May 7, 1901 in Sofia) was a Bulgarian politician and Prime Minister.

Biography

Study and career

After schooling in Bessarabia he studied law in Aix -en- Provence, where he graduated in 1875. Subsequently, he worked as a lawyer in Brăila.

After the (limited) independence of Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire on May 13, 1879, he became president of the Supreme Court in Sofia. This office he retained until July 5, 1879.

His son Aleksandar Grekow was a diplomat during the First World War.

MP and Minister

Also after independence, he began his political career in 1879 with the election of deputies, where he represented until 1883, first the interests of the Conservative Party ( Консервативната партия ). Grekow was in particular one of the authors resolved on April 16, 1879 the first constitution, known as the Constitution of Turnovo.

On July 17, 1879, he was appointed by Conservative Prime Minister Todor Burmow the first Minister of Justice of independent Bulgaria and held that office until April 7, 1880. From 6 to 11 December 1879, he was in personal union the same time Minister of the Interior. From 5 July 1882 to 15 March 1883 he was again a member of the Cabinet of Ministers of Justice Leonid Sobolev. From 9 September to 25 December 1883, he was also President of the National Assembly.

Later he became a member of the People's Liberal Party ( Bulg Народнолибералната партия ) and was again elected as such from 1887 to 1894 and from 1899 to 1900 as a deputy of the National Assembly.

On November 14, 1890, he was appointed by Prime Minister Stefan Stambolov Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Religion. These offices he held until the end of Stambolov's term of office on 31 May 1894. From October 2, 1891 to February 25, 1892, he was also Minister of Justice again.

After the death of Stambolov and only a one-year transitional period of Dimitar Petkov he was in 1896 elected Chairman of the National Liberal Party. After his death, Petkov was then again elected chairman.
