Dimitri Gutas

Dimitri Gutas, Greek Δημήτρης Γούτας (* 1945) is an American Arabist and Hellenist Greek origin.

Gutas studied classical philology, history of religion, Arabic and Islamic Studies at Yale University, where in 1974 he to the Ph.D. received his doctorate. From 1985 to 1989 he was at the University of Crete in Rhethymno professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies, and since then he has been Professor of Arabic and Arab reception of Greek texts Department of Near Eastern Languages ​​and Civilizations, Yale University, USA in.

His main areas of interest are classical Arabic and the intellectual tradition of the Middle Ages in the Islamic culture, especially Avicenna, and the Graeco- Arabica, that is, the reception and transmission of Greek works on medicine, science and philosophy in the Arab- Islamic world (especially from 8th to the 10th century in Baghdad ). Gutas is a member of the scientific advisory board of numerous journals, including Journal of the leading Arabic Sciences and Philosophy ( Cambridge University Press), and co-editor of and contributors to the revision of the Ueberweg, a comprehensive history of philosophy, the four volumes will now include the Arab philosophy.
