Dinamo Riga ( Latvian Rigas " Dinamo ", Russian Динамо Рига ) is a Latvian ice hockey club from Riga, Latvia. It was established on 7 April 2008 to play in the new Kontinental Hockey League. The club is owned by a number of companies and individuals, which Itera Latvija ( Latvian gas company, which belongs to Gazprom ), Guntis Ulmanis ( the fifth President of Latvia), Aigars Kalvītis ( former Prime Minister of Latvia) and Aldis Pauniņš belong.

History

End of May 2008 was the former coach of HK Riga 2000, the Slovak Július Šupler, introduced as new head coach. His compatriot Miroslav Miklošovič was engaged as assistant coach of the Slovakian first division club HC Slovan Bratislava. A short time later explained one of the co-owners, Viesturs Koziol that Dinamo Riga undertake no Russian players and next to the Latvian national team only other top European players will be under contract.

In June and July 2008 were then obliged to strengthen the squad Marcel Hossa of the Phoenix Coyotes, Matt Ellison and Filip Novák. There were later Duvie Westcott and Ronald Petrovický and Artūrs Irbe, who was signed as a goalkeeper coach. The HK Riga 2000 of the Latvian Hockey League acted in the 2008 /09 as a farm team of the club.

After a robbery at goalkeeper Edgars Masaļskis in September 2008, was injured in the Masaļskis, the management of the club committed to Swedish goalkeeper Daniel Sperrle for two months with an option for extension of the contract for the entire season. The contract with Sperrle however, was dissolved at the end of October 2008. Instead, succeeded the obligation of the Czechs Martin Prusek, who was henceforth goalkeeper of the team. At the end of the season they finished in tenth place in the KHL and reached the play-off second round, where they lost all three games against the HK Dynamo Moscow and therefore stood down.

In the summer of 2009, Mark Hartigan, Matt Ellison, Filip Novák and Duvie Westcott left the club. As a replacement Martin Kariya, Mike Iggulden and Lee Sweatt were committed. However, the biggest shock was the signing of the contract by NHL veteran Sandis Ozoliòš, who returned after a year of inactivity on ice and also took over the captaincy. Due to financial problems, the HK Riga 2000 broke up, so that Dinamo Dinamo- Juniors Riga with established his own farm team, which participated in the Belarusian Extraliga. After a year of this young team was transferred to the Riga HK, takes part in the Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja League ( MHL ) since 2010.

For the 2011/12 season the Finn Pekka Rautakallio was engaged as head coach and all foreign players to replace goalkeeper Chris Holt by signings.

As a representative of KHL Dinamo Riga at the Spengler Cup took part in 2011 and only lost in the final HC Davos.
