In May 1983, she released her debut album Holy Diver, which was awarded on 12 September 1984, gold and on 21 March 1989 with platinum. On this album, Ronnie James Dio was still playing itself keyboard, but since the band did not want to, that he had to stand during concerts always behind the keyboard, she took in 1984 Claude Quick as a solid band keyboardist.

As a quintet they published on July 2, 1984 their second album The Last in Line, which reached even before Holy Diver platinum status ( selling over a million albums). A year later, on 15 August 1985 for the third album Sacred Heart appeared ( gold). During the tour for this album, some live recordings were taken, which were then published in 1986 in Intermission.

Vivian Campbell left in 1986 due to creative differences Dio towards Whitesnake and Def Leppard later. He was replaced by Craig Goldy, who participated in the recordings for the fourth studio album Dream Evil (1987 ) before he too like his predecessor in 1988 left the band again for the same reasons. The band fell apart, and in June 1989 had also Bain and go fast. In December 1989, finally went Appice. For the next album Lock Up the Wolves put Ronnie James Dio together a new line-up, next to the 18 -year-old Rowan Robertson also Teddy Cook, Jens Johansson and Simon Wright participated in the recordings. Then Ronnie James Dio put the band quietly for a reunion with Black Sabbath for a few months.

After only one album with Black Sabbath ( Dehumanizer ) reactivated Ronnie James Dio his band. From the former cast members Vinny Appice just returned. For the remaining items guitarist Tracy G, keyboardist Scott Warren and bassist Jeff Pilson were hired. The albums of the next few years - Strange Highways (1993 ) Angry Machines (1996) and Inferno - Last in Live - were disputed by their new sound among fans. Many did not like the move away from the sound of the 1980s. Even Ronnie James Dio admitted in interviews that he, specifically Angry Machines, was not satisfied with these albums. For the next album he won Craig Goldy back, and Jimmy Bain of the band joined again. Magica was again successful, reaching number 13 on the Billboard Independent Charts, which is why the concept album is also called comeback album.

During the following tours with Deep Purple Europe and Yngwie Malmsteen and Doro by the U.S. tensions between the members arose again. Goldy left the band in January 2002 and was replaced by Doug Aldrich, Bain had met at a tribute album for Metallica during the recordings. He took with Dio on the ninth album Killing the Dragon and accompanied the band on a tour with Scorpions and Deep Purple. He then moved in April 2003 to Whitesnake, Goldy and came back. Shortly after it left Bain the band again.

Dio published in 2004 with Jeff Pilson on bass, the tenth studio album Master of the Moon. Since Pilson but had primary commitments, he was replaced by Rudy Sarzo after the recordings. In 2005, the live album Evil or Divine appeared - Live in New York City, which was already released on DVD in 2003. In the autumn 2005 tour Dio played two different sets, a normal mixed and one that consisted of only the songs of their debut album Holy Diver. An appearance in London with the second set was recorded and released in April 2006 as a double CD Holy Diver Live.

On 16 May 2010, Ronnie James Dio died of a stomach cancer. This was the reason for the breakup of the band.
