Phosphor ( II) iodide is a chemical compound with the formula P2I4. It consists of two phosphorus atoms in the oxidation state 2, which are connected to one another via a single bond. Each phosphorus atom has two further bonds to iodine.
Representation
Phosphor ( II) iodide may be recovered from the elements. For this purpose, white phosphorus with elemental iodine is reacted.
Other possibilities are the iodination of phosphine and the iodination of phosphorus trichloride with potassium iodide.
Properties
Phosphor ( II) iodide is a compound solid at room temperature that melts at 125.5 ° C. Phosphor ( II) iodide reacts with bromine to form a mixture of phosphorus triiodide, phosphorus tribromide and the mixed halides and PBr2I PBrI2.
Use
Phosphor ( II) iodide may be used for the synthesis of aziridines from amino alcohols.
Further it is used for the preparation of nitriles of carboxylic acids.
