Direction of movement

The concept of dance is used to describe several phenomena used in the dance language of the Choreology: the rotational directions, directions of movement and orientation of dancers.

For a description of these various phenomena more criteria are used: clockwise / counterclockwise mitsonnen, / against sun, clockwise / anti-clockwise, left / right, up / down.

The line of dance is a relative indication of direction. You can refer to the entire dance floor, to a group of Dancing or on the front of a chain of dancers.

In the ballroom dances of dance called a general direction of movement of all couples in relation to the center of the dance floor, on a so-called circular path, and is uniformly counterclockwise.

In dances with the installation of the dancers in the circle refers the dance toward the center of the circle, the contra dance to the music or the audience for chain dances on the front of the dancers.

Of dance as an orientation system on the dance floor

From a common dance direction, an orientation system can be derived on the dance floor. For this, the directions of movement or orientation of the body of the dancers are related to the line of dance.

This produces the following directional terms:

  • In the line of dance
  • Obliquely outwards
  • Outward
  • Obliquely outwards against the line of dance
  • Against the line of dance
  • Obliquely to the center against line of dance
  • The middle
  • Obliquely to the middle

Explanation of terms

Clockwise / anticlockwise

Also clockwise and counter-clockwise called, see direction rechtssdrehend and levorotatory. Rechtssdrehend can also be derived from a rotation around itself, where one rotates forward to his right side of the body (shoulder) or backward with the right leg backwards starting.

Mitsonnen / against sun

Mitsonnen corresponds to a direction of rotation clockwise or clockwise. Against Suns thus refers to a direction of rotation counter-clockwise or counter-clockwise. Were used mitsonnen / against bask in the description of folk dances. Be derived mitsonnen / against sunbathe by the apparent movement of the sun over the horizon.
