Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (European Commission)

The Directorate-General for Energy and Transport ( DG TREN short ) was a General of the European Commission. She was assigned to the Transport Commissioner and the Commissioner for Energy in the EU Commission Barroso (2004 to 2009) were the Antonio Tajani and Andris Piebalgs. Director-General was Matthias Ruete.

The General was among other things responsible for the regulation and control of European energy and transport network. Energy policy, she steered the areas of energy sources in accordance with the demand and organizes the opening of the energy market for electricity and gas as well as the market for rail transport.

The Directorate-General for Energy and Transport was divided Mobility and Transport in the Directorate General for Energy and the Directorate-General on 17 February 2010.

Directorates

The Directorate-General consisted of ten directorates, including eight in Brussels (700 employees) and two in Luxembourg (300 employees).

The Directorates in Brussels were (August 2007):

  • Directorate D: Resources
  • Directorate A: General Affairs
  • Directorate B: Trans-European Networks for Energy and Transport
  • Directorate C: security of supply and energy markets
  • Directorate D: New and renewable energy, energy efficiency and innovation
  • Directorate E: Land transport
  • Directorate F: aviation
  • Directorate G: Logistics, Innovation, Co- Modallität and maritime
  • Directorate J: Security and protection of persons, goods and equipment

The directorates were in Luxembourg (August 2007):

  • Directorate H: Nuclear Energy
  • Directorate I: Monitoring of nuclear safety

Some directorates were partially associated with the Euratom.

Political control function

The General had the right of political supervision for the following European agencies and European executive agencies (October 2006):

  • European Agency for Maritime Safety Agency ( EMSA) in Lisbon.
  • European Aviation Safety Agency ( EASA) in Cologne.
  • European Railway Agency (ERA) in Valenciennes.
  • Galileo Joint Undertaking in Brussels.
  • GNSS Supervisory Authority (GSA ) in Brussels.
  • Euratom Supply Agency ( ESA) in Luxembourg.

History

On 1 January 2000, the Directorate-General for Energy and Transport was formed by the merging of the two Directorates-General for Energy and Transport. In June 2002, the H and I of the Euratom Safeguards was formed.

Policy

Trans-European networks

The Trans-European networks consist of networks of Energy ( TEN-E ), transport ( TEN-T ) and telecommunications ( eTENs). Here ( in particular the European Regional Development Fund ) and the Cohesion Fund are projects of international importance by the EU TEN-budget line, the EU Structural Funds co-financed.

The transport ministers have the Pan-European transport corridors in 1994 and 1997 set as a supplement to the trans-European transport network for Western Europe. These main roads to Europe from the Atlantic to the Urals and from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean combine.

Florence and Madrid Forums

The European Commission created in 1998 the so-called Forum of Florence (European Electricity Regulation Forum ( eerf ) ) and 1999, the so-called Forum of Madrid ( European Gas Regulation Forum ( EGFR ) ). With two once or twice a year to be held forums integration of national energy markets should be promoted to a single European energy market.
