Disappearance Diary

The outlier (Japanese失踪 日记, Shisso Nikki, literally Verschollen PRIME diary) is a manga by the Japanese illustrator Hideo Azuma in 2005. The work was awarded, among others, with the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize -.

The manga deals with the autobiographical outs in the life of the artist. Here, the work is not always serious, but is rather in the style of a Funny comics.

Action

Hideo Azuma runs away in 1989 before his work and his home to hang himself. The suicide attempt fails, so he opts for a life as a homeless person, to distance himself completely from his previous life. When he gets used to the new lifestyle, he is recognized by a policeman and pushed into his old life.

Azuma 1992 disappears again and tried it as a homeless person, but this is sick. He rents an apartment and works as a gas pipe fitter. The police attacks on him again. Again, in everyday life, he decides to continue to work as a gas pipe fitter, but then returns to his work as a cartoonist.

In spring 1998, Azuma, who has trouble with his alcohol addiction, forced to withdrawal. In rehabilitation clinic he met numerous patients whose addiction is much greater than his.

Style

Despite the serious subject matter, the work is held in Funny style and contains a lot of self-irony. The drawings are simple and crude, realism is dispensed with. The publisher East Press published the manga in Japan in 2005.

Ponent Mon published the anthology as Diario de una Desaparición in November 2006 in Spain and plans under the title Disappearance Diary is also a publication of The outlier in English. In January 2007 Kana brought a French translation of the manga with the title Journal d'une disparition. In German the manga was published by writer and reader in the fall of 2007.

Reception

Azuma won the 2005 Grand Prize in the category of manga at the Japan Media Arts Festival and the Prize of the Association of Japanese comic artist and in 2006 the first prize at the presentation of Osamu - Tezuka Culture Prize and the Seiun prize for the best non-fiction work.
