Display Data Channel

The Display Data Channel ( DDC) is a serial communication interface between the monitor and PC that allows data exchange via monitor cable and allows the operating system to automatically install the display driver and configure (Plug & Play).

The Video Electronics Standards Association ( VESA) has issued the following versions of this industry standard:

  • DDC1 (version 1): All the repeated transmission of the Extended Display Identification Data (EDID ) from the monitor to the graphics card. In the 128 bytes of the EDID data structure information on the VESA DPMS standard compatibility and support are included.
  • DDC2B (Version 2 Level B): Allows now the bi-directional transmission of the VESA Display Identification File ( VDIF ). The monitor can thus respond to specific requests from the graphics card.
  • DDC2AB: How DDC2B, but transmission is still more data to drive the monitor

In order to exchange information, the graphics card, cable and monitor must support this data channel.

Technically using an I ² C-like interface.
