Dive light

The dive light, dive light also, is a powered or rechargeable batteries Hand lamp in a water-tight and pressure-proof housing for use in scuba diving.

Use

The dive light is particularly used as an illumination at night and cave dives, but also dives a day, for example, commonly used for color reproduction, for the illumination of columns or underwater films.

Water absorbs the red with increasing depth first, later the yellow and green spectral components of daylight. Red is no longer perceptible already in 5 m water depth. Through the dive light, it is possible to look at an object in the full color also at greater depths. Since water absorbs light more strongly, the lamp should be very bright.

Bulbs

The lamps use LED and halogen lamps are common. In addition, gas discharge lamps ( HID and Xenon lamp ) and incandescent lamps are used.

LED lamps are proportionate to the size and weight very bright and have a longer burn time than, for example halogen lamps. LED lamps usually give off a cool white light that often seems bluish, in terms of color temperature is lugubrious and red color are very bad again. However, halogen light is warm white, has a slightly yellowish appearance, in which the colors are under water very good effect. The light range is, however, reduced halogen lamps compared to LED and xenon lamps with higher color temperature.

Lamp shapes

The various levels of lamp shapes with respect to the use and function:

  • Hand lamp as the main light: lamp head and batteries or rechargeable batteries in a housing, ideal for holidays dive
  • Backup Lamp: small torch as a reserve lamp for the case of an accident the main bulb, particularly high Burn time
  • Tank Lamp: originally from the field of technical diving dive light with separate components, the lamp head and battery tank, connected by a watertight cable; the battery tank is usually mounted on BCD or compressed air bottle while the lamp head attached to the forearm or held with a Goodman handle in hand

Torches have usually via a reflector, a kind of curved mirror which directs the light emitting side forward. According to the shape of the reflector used in the following lamps can be distinguished:

  • Spot lamps: Torches usually have a spot reflector with a beam angle of about 5 ° to 15 °, which focuses the light.
  • Flood lights: flood reflectors with larger angle are used in particular as a photo or movie light.

With manual and tank lamps, the reflector can be usually changed, so that the appropriate use for each beam angle can be selected.
