Divine Mercy Sanctuary (Kraków)

The Shrine of the Divine Mercy (Polish Sanctuary of Divine Mercy ) in the district Łagiewniki the southern Polish city of Krakow is a young Roman Catholic place of pilgrimage. It is dedicated to the worship of the Divine Mercy in the Jesus picture of the Divine Mercy according to the description of the holy Faustina Kowalska. Even the grave Sr. Faustynas is located here. Center of the complex is from 1999, which was designed by Witold Cęckiewicz and August 17, 2002 by Pope John Paul II consecrated the Basilica of Divine Mercy. She has the rank of a minor basilica and an International Shrine.

History

1891, the convent of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy was established with a large convent building and a Gothic monastery church under the patronage of St. Joseph in Kraków - Łagiewniki. There Sr. Faustina lived during her novitiate 1925-1930 and in recent weeks, until her death on October 5, 1938. She was buried in the monastery cemetery.

Sr. Faustynas mystical experiences and by their description in 1944 by Adolf Hyła painted for the monastery church image of Merciful Jesus quickly became popular. In 1966, her remains were exhumed and interred in the Church with a stone slab.

The official Roman recognition, but was only in 1978 after a long diocesan preparatory work at the request of the then Archbishop of Cracow, who shortly afterwards when John Paul II became Pope.

The Pope from Krakow promoted the spiritual legacy and devotion to Sr. Faustynas. She was beatified in 1993. Now, her relics were recovered in a shrine which was on the left side altar of the monastery church of St. Joseph under the original image of the Merciful Jesus lineup. On April 30, 2000, the first official Mercy Sunday Sister Faustina was canonized. Meanwhile, the new basilica was under construction, and since its completion among the sanctuary of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Europe.

Sanctuary

The building complex of the Shrine of Divine Mercy includes, in addition to the Basilica, the monastery with the Church of St. Joseph, chapels, meeting rooms and a pilgrim hotel.

The basilica is one oriented to the southeast oval, which closes on the side of the altar with a straight glass wall. This is above the tabernacle with the Mercy image, a hollow, conical round tower, entering through the light and its shape is reminiscent of the beams of the image. Higher than this rises on the opposite side of the free-standing bell tower lean. At its basement a bronze statue of John Paul II is mounted on a schiffsbugförmigen balcony, which can fly a dove.

The Basilica is one of a vast crypt with various prayer and Beichträumen.
