Diyala Governorate

Diyala (Arabic ديالى, Diyala DMG ) is one of Iraq's 18 governorates. The capital is Baquba. The government begins northeast of Baghdad and extends to the Iranian border.

Location and population

Diyala covers an area of ​​17,685 km ². 2003, the estimated number of 1.271 million people, mostly Sunni Arabs and Kurds. The province is traversed by the river of the same Diyala, one of the main tributaries of the Tigris. Typical for the region are date and orange plantations.

Administrative Divisions

The province is divided into six districts:

  • Al - Caliph
  • Al - Muqdadiyya
  • Baquba
  • Baladruz
  • Chanaqin
  • Kifri

The Kurdish- populated part is partially governed by the autonomous region of Kurdistan.

On 15 October 2005 of 476 980 voters voted 51.27 % yes for the new constitution.

The security of the government and the border with Iran takes over in July 2006, the newly-formed 5th Infantry Division of the Iraqi army as part of the Multinational Force in Iraq.
