Dizengoff Street

The Dizengoffstraße (Hebrew דיזנגוף רחוב, Rehov Dizengoff ) is a major thoroughfare in downtown Tel Aviv. It is named after Tel Aviv's first mayor, Meir Dizengoff.

The road begins in the south at the corner of Ibn Gabirol Street, and extends to the port in the north of the city. They crossed the Dizengoffplatz and connects on the extension of King George Street White City with Neve Tsedek.

History

The Dizengoffstraße was built 1927-1929 as part of the Geddes Plan as a major route of the northern city of Tel Aviv. Mayor Meir Dizengoff 1925 had the Scottish town planner Patrick Geddes Sir won for the design of the first large systematic expansion of the city. Including already incurred quarters Geddes planned a grid of main traffic and side streets and public places, which formed the basis for the development of the White City.

The Dizengoffstraße quickly evolved into a busy commercial street and became a symbol of new beginnings. In its heyday, it was even referred to as the " Champs- Élysées of Tel Aviv ." In the Hebrew slang it found its way to the term l' hizdangef ( להזדנגף ) - roughly translated as dizengoffen ( " The Dizengoffstraße walk along. ").

In the 1970s, began the construction of a shopping mall, in the Dizengoff Center, the slow deterioration of the road. Even the little empathetic reconstruction of the Dizengoffplatzes of a roundabout with an idyllic park contributed to the decreasing popularity of the road to a multi-storey motorway crossing.

In particular, the southern section of the road was affected by this decline. North of the Dizengoffplatzes there are still higher quality fashion shops, as well as a number of small cafes and bistros. Also, in recent years, an upswing trend: Many of the partly severely dilapidated monuments in the White City have been restored and enhanced by high quality new buildings. It is also discussed about the dismantling of the pedestrian ramps and restoring the original shape of the Dizengoffplatzes for several years.
