DJ Olive

DJ Olive (* 1961 in Boston as Gregor Asch ) is an American sound artist and turntablist, who mainly produces in Illbient genre, but is heavily influenced by jazz and new music improvisation.

Life and work

DJ Olive, who grew up as the son of the anthropologist and filmmaker Timothy Asch in Rhode Iceland, Nova Scotia, Trinidad and Australia, finished his studies in 1987 at the State University of New York Purchase with a Bachelor's degree. After living in Greece, he moved to Brooklyn in 1990 and became a member of the art scene of Williamsburg.. " Its based on free improvisation, sound sculptures had an extraordinary standing not only in the music scene, but also in the art scene of New York " For example, he organized in 2002 Roof Music: Sunrise on a Rooftop in Brooklyn, a sound installation, the intended all participants to unite culturally.

In 1994 he founded ( with Ignacio Platas aka Once 11 and Rich Panciera alias Lloop ) the trio WE which to fill Ambient stressed with content. Next, he worked with the group Lunchbox; with Lloop and former Lounge Lizards - guitarist Danny Blume he formed the ambient jazz band Liminal. At Uri Caine's Primal Light album he also contributed as to whose version of the Goldberg Variations, which he presented with both also in Europe. With Christian Marclay Turntable Trio he played at the Whitney Museum in New York, the Centre Pompidou and the Cologne Philharmonie. As of 2003, he presented some solo albums; still he also worked with Arto Lindsay, Medeski, Martin & Wood ( Bubble House ), Elliott Sharp, William Hooker ( Mindfulness 1996), Zeena Parkins and Dave Douglas (Keystone 2005 Spark of Being 2010) together.
