Region

Dogondoutchi is a town and the capital of the eponymous department Dogondoutchi in Niger.

Geography

Dogondoutchi is located at the junction of Great Landscape Sudan Sahel zone near the border with Nigeria. The cityscape is dominated by a 260 m high Table Mountain in the north- east of the city, which also bears the name Dogondoutchi. Dogondoutchi means " top rock ". The road network is applied to the ring part around the city center. The city is divided into 15 districts, 16 administrative villages, 62 traditional villages, hamlets and four nine stock. The district called Agadez, Baghdad, Bozaroua Doutchi, Bozaroua Koré, Chama, Damago, Danni Konna, Guijia Allage, Guijia Mayaki, Konaoua, Maïzari, Oubandawaki, Sarkin Noma, Tantchia and Wadata. The neighboring municipalities are Dogondoutchis Soucoucoutane in the north, Matankari in the Northeast, Dan - Kassari in the east, in the southeast Kiéché, Koré Maïroua in the south, Tombokoirey II in the southwest and Falwel in the West.

History

The area around Dogondoutchi was first settled by the Arewa and the Gubawa that represent subsets of the Maouri, which in turn are a sub- group of the Hausa and differ from the other Hausa by special scarifications. Dogondoutchi was probably founded in the late 18th century as a village of Konawa, a subset of Arewa.

During the occupation of French West Africa's officers Paul Voulet and Julien Chanoine 1899 advanced into the disputed territory between France and Great Britain as the first French. 1906 a British military post was built in Dogondoutchi, which was soon taken over by the French. This moved the seat of the regional colonial government of the place Matankari after Dogondoutchi. Also, the Sarkin, the traditional leader of the Arewa, shifted his official residence of then Matankari after Dogondoutchi, where he is today.

Until 1972 in Niger only the cities Niamey, Maradi, Tahoua and Zinder had the status of an independent parish. This year Dogondoutchi was collected simultaneously with six other locations Niger to the community.

2008 suffered during floods over 5600 people physical damage. From the floods in West and Central Africa in 2010 Dogondoutchi was less affected than other places in Niger, 240 inhabitants were classified as disaster victims.

Population

In the year 1948 4.330 people lived in the city. In the 1977 census Dogondoutchi already had 14,629 inhabitants in the census in 1988 20,407 inhabitants in the 2001 census 28 951 inhabitants. For the year 2010 77.035 inhabitants were calculated.

The Konawa form the majority population, together with other subgroups of Arewa. The town also has live small groups of Zarma, Tuareg and Fulani.

Policy

In the local elections in July 2004 Bagoudou Souley ( PNDS - Tarayya ) was elected mayor. On 15 April 2010 the Council of Ministers Adamou Hamidou appointed administrator ( Administrateur Délégué ) the community.

Culture and sights

The Great Mosque and the chefferie face each other in the old city center. On a chair in front of chefferie the Sarkin Arewa the court holds. Here affairs of the community are discussed and decisions are made.

Economy and infrastructure

There is a small daily market in the center of the old city center and a great market on the road to Niamey, where a market every Friday. Dogondoutchi is located on the National Road 1, which here is part of the Dakar - N'Djamena - highway, and 23 on the National Road leading to the Tagazar The city is served by all four major bus companies in the country. In Dogondoutchi a civilian airport located with unpaved airstrip, the Dogondoutchi Airport ( ICAO code: DRRD ).

Dogondoutchi is the seat of the Tribunal d' Instance, one of the nation's 30 civil courts, which is below the ten civil courts of first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance ) are, and the Association contre le SIDA d'action ( Asasi ). The non-governmental organization dedicated to the education about AIDS and also organizes cultural events in the city.
