Dolby Atmos is the name of a surround sound technology, which was announced in April 2012 from Dolby Laboratories.

History

Merida used as the first movie - Legend of the Highlands of Pixar the new system. The first cinema in which the new technology was also used for this demonstration is the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. There the premiere of Merida was founded in June 2012 - Legend of the Highlands shown. In 2012, 25 movie theaters were equipped with the system worldwide. It is planned to extend the distribution to approximately 1,000 locations in 2013. In German-speaking countries, there were already two cinemas in early 2013 with this technique. The technology initially aimed at commercial cinemas, but plan to later for home theater installations.

During the first films had to be remixed in the new sound system for Atmos, was Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion (2013 ) the first film to be directly mixed in Dolby Atmos and where the 5.1 and 7.1 sound was derived from the atmos - tone. The first German film, which was directly mixed in Dolby Atmos, lost place was.

Technology

The format theoretically allows an unlimited number of audio tracks. These are provided to the cinemas for optimal and dynamic distribution of signals to the speakers. The first generation of the hardware, Dolby Atmos Cinema Processor, supports up to 128 individual audio tracks and up to 64 separate loudspeaker signals. Dolby Atmos is backward- compatible with older systems such as 5.1 or 7.1. These use loudspeaker arrays, so several speakers that radiate sound the same. The new system can give an individual signal to each speaker. This makes it possible to install many other front, surround and ceiling speakers. Thus, a sound source be placed precisely in space and thus a realistic simulation of, for example rain or helicopters is possible. It does not matter where the listener is in the room. In older systems, however, it had the best sound experience just in the middle of the room, or at the point on the speaker system was aligned.
