Dolichovespula

Mean wasp ( Dolichovespula media)

The Dolichovespula ( Dolichovespula ) are a genus within the family of wasps ( Vespidae ). Worldwide 18 species are known, which are widespread in the Holarctic and Oriental. Six species, such as Dolichovespula maculata are found in North America, in Europe, there are seven, of which six are endemic in Central Europe. The genus includes relatively peaceful species whose peoples develop relatively quickly.

Features

Dolichovespula differ from similar Vespula ( Vespula ) and hornets (Vespa ) by the side of the prothorax extending at both sides yellow longitudinal line that begins directly behind the head ( at the North American species also white). This feature, however, is sometimes not trained, so it's clearly only with his presence a demarcation. Another distinguishing feature is a pronounced distance between the lower edge of the eye and the approach of the mandibles. In the two similar species is located between mandibles and compound eyes, only a narrow range. The workers of Dolichovespula reach with their elongated head thus better adapted to the nectaries of deep flowers.
