Domat -Ems Chur

Domat / Ems (Romansh Domat [ domɐt ]? / I, and German until 1943 officially EMS ) is a municipality in the district of Imboden in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. Domat / Ems is a double name of the Romansh and German name of the village. Pronounced it is mostly used as Domatems.

Particularly striking are the many churches which identify the different stages of growth of the community. The oldest church is Sogn Pieder (Saint Peter ) at the foot of Tuma Castè ( Castle Hill) in the village center. The municipal area includes the above Panix lying alp alp Ranasca.

Geographically Domat / Ems is known for the twelve Tumas on his municipality.

Population

Languages

Until the mid-19th century the entire population spoke a bündner Romanesque dialect. Although this was a mittelbündnerische dialect, the Sursilvan was used as a written language traditionally in all municipalities of the district Imboden. In this capacity, they resembled the communities Berguen Filisur where also mittelbündnischere dialects were in use and are, as a written language but the Oberengadinische (where, historically, mainly for religious reasons) was in use.

In the second half of the century, the number of German-speaking rose, but the majority remained loyal to the Roman language (1880 90 % and 1900 89%). Economy

Domat / Ems is one of the most important industrial locations in Graubünden.

The main employer is the Ems-Chemie, which is connected with its former owner, the politician Christoph Blocher, inseparable. In order for this factory can be operated with standard gauge freight trains of the Swiss Federal Railways, a three -rail track was built between Chur and Domat / Ems.

The former large sawmill Stallinger ( Swiss Timber ) in the west of the municipality was taken in mid-May of 2007 and offered jobs for about 200 people. Stallinger was acquired in April 2009 by the Mayr- Melnhof group. End of 2010, the United sawmill went bankrupt, the sawmill equipment was sold for 20 million francs to the Klausner Group, the building at the Tyrolean Pfeifer Group from Imst.

In September 2011, the Pfeifer Group auctioned the building rights and the workshops. Since the plants were never mined contrary to the order of the Bankruptcy Office, the Office decreed the beginning of April 2012, the components and systems are to dismantle until June 30.

On the Rhine, the power plant is located Reichenau.

History

Domat / Ems was mentioned 765 AD under the name Amedes in the will of the bishop of Chur Tello first time.

Initially November 2007 discovered a worker on the grounds of the Ems-Chemie on the edge of the premises after rain had washed human bones from a slope, in a former lime kiln a mass grave from 1799; the dead are from a battle of the French against the Grisons on May 3, 1799 (see Helvetic Republic).

From 1943 was east of the village, a military airfield from which the standardized light aircraft hangar can still be seen today. The military used the space until 2004 for refueling of helicopters, the hangar was also used by the Heliswiss.

Culture and sights

Particularly well known are the Catholic processions that are carried out in Domat / Ems. The most famous is that of Corpus Christi, which is performed ten days after the Pentecost. Also important is the Assumption procession as well as the Good Friday procession.

An important place in the Domat - Ems culture occupies the carnival. This takes place over four days and ends on venergis informal. The highlight is the Gievgia grassa ( Shrove Tuesday ).
