Domenico Alfani

Domenico Alfani, actually Domenico di Paride Alfani (* 1479 in Perugia, † 1553 ) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance in Umbria.

Life

Alfani was the son of a goldsmith Paride Alfani. In Perugia, he received his education together with Raphael in Perugia in the workshop of Pietro Perugino. The close friendship between Raphael and Alfani and their occasional collaboration led to their works each other often resembled and it came to false attributions in the past. Later he went into the workshop of Giulio Romano and finally to Fra Bartolomeo to Florence. In the following years he explores their stylistic shaped the art of his last period lasting with the Florentine school by Andrea del Sarto and Rosso Fiorentino. 1510 he was admitted to the painters' guild of Perugia, 1535, he married the mother of his children, which he had already legitimized 1520.

When his earliest extant and probably the best picture applies the "Enthroned Madonna between Saint Nicholas and Gregory " from 1518 that now in the National Gallery of Umbria (Perugia ) is located. Basis for this image was an original drawing by Raphael, to the " Mackintosh Madonna" by 1509/10 (London, National Gallery ).
