Don Jamieson (politician)

Donald "Don" Campbell Jamieson PC ( born April 30, 1921 in St. John's, Newfoundland; † 19 November 1986) was a Canadian broadcaster, lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada.

Life

After schooling Jamieson worked as a decorator at radio and in television and later as a radio presenter. He then studied law and graduated with a Doctor of Laws ( LL.D. ).

As a candidate of the Liberal Party, he was first elected in a by-election ( By-election ) in September 1966 in the constituency of Burin - Burgeo as a member of the lower house and this was after several re- elections until June 1979. After the electoral victory of the Liberal Party Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau appointed him in June 1968 as Minister for armaments production in the 20th Federal Cabinet. Afterwards he was short April-May 1969 Minister of Supply and Services, before he then until November 1972 was transport minister.

As part of a cabinet reshuffle after the general election of 30 October 1972, he was in November 1972 Minister for regional economic expansion and then from September 1975 to September 1976 Minister of Industry, Commerce and Companies Agency. In September 1976, he was named as the successor to Allan MacEachen Trudeau as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In June 1979, he resigned from his ministerial position and lay down even his seat in the House after he became chairman of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador, where he failed to lead the party to an election victory against the Progressive Conservative Party, the Brian Peckford 1979 the Prime Minister of Newfoundland and Labrador presented and had an absolute majority in 33 of 52 seats in the Chamber of Deputies of the province. The Liberals came up with 19 seats and he became leader of the opposition. In June 1980, he resigned this office and also waived his seat in the House of Representatives, where he represented the constituency of Bellevue.

Last Jamieson was 1982-1985 High Commissioner in the UK.
