Donald Stokes, Baron Stokes

Donald Gresham Stokes, Baron Stokes ( * March 22, 1914, † 21 July 2008) was a British industrialist.

Career

Stokes began his career in 1930 as an apprentice with Leyland Motors Ltd, and (with interruption for military service from 1939 to 1945 ) completed a successful career in this business, until his appointment as Chairman and Managing Director of the British Leyland Motor Corporation Ltd ( BL) 1968, a challenging role in the public opinion of that time.

1977 Michael Edwardes became the " chief executive " appointed, but Stokes remained until 1979. 1969 he was elevated to a Life Peer. At the time of his death he was the second oldest member of the House of Lords. There he was Cross Bencher.
