Donald Verrilli Jr.

Donald Beaton Verrilli ( born June 29, 1957 in New Rochelle, New York) is an American lawyer. Since 9 June 2011, he is the reigning United States Solicitor General.

Biography

1957 Donald Verrilli was born the son of Donald and Rose Marie Verrilli in New Rochelle. With his parents he moved to Wilton, Connecticut to where he graduated in 1975 at the Wilton High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979 from Yale University, his Juris Doctor in 1983 from Columbia University. After graduating, he worked as a consultant for the judge at the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, J. Skelly Wright, and William Joseph Brennan, Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court, works.

Verilli with Gail W. vice, a lawyer, married. Together they have a daughter.

Career as a lawyer

Verrilli rose at the law firm Jenner & Block a, where he was from then on worked as a lawyer. There, he specialized in telecommunications and media law and the First Amendment. During his time at Jenner & Block, he represented, among others the Recording Industry Association of America v. in cases MGM Grokster and Capitol v. Thomas to the Supreme Court, he represented Viacom in 2007 in the proceedings between Viacom v. Google just there. During his time as a lawyer at Jenner & Block, he joined more than 100 cases before the Supreme Court, 12 of which he won for his clients.

Ascent to the Solicitor General

President Barack Obama appointed him in early 2009 for assisting Deputy Attorney General. In 2010, he eventually became advisor of Barack Obama to the White House. Already after Elena Kagan was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court, Verrilli was regarded as the most promising successor. First, however, Neal Katyal was provisionally entrusted with the administration. On January 26, 2011, Obama finally nominated Verrilli as the new United States Solicitor General. On 12 May 2011 the Senate Committee on the Judiciary agreed with 17:1 votes for Verrilli. The Senate confirmed the nomination on 6 June 2011 with 72 to 16 votes. On June 9, 2011 Verrilli was officially inaugurated.

He had his most significant appearance to date in the proceedings before the United States Supreme Court, in which it came to the negotiation to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
