Dongfeng (missile)

The CSS -2 is a land-based medium range ballistic missile of the People's Republic of China. The Chinese armed forces, the rocket is called " DF- 3" or " Dongfeng 3".

Development

The development of the CSS -2 began in the mid 1960s. The CSS -2 was the first ballistic missile of the People's Republic of China, which was without the support of the Soviet Union. Test -offs and flight tests were conducted 1966-1968. In 1970, the first missiles of the People's Liberation Army has been sent.

The improved version " CSS -2A " was introduced in 1987. This version features a modified steering system and achieved a hit accuracy (CEP ) of around 1,000 m. Similarly, the range could be increased to 2,800 km.

The People's Liberation Army procured 90 to 100 systems. In the 1980s, 30-40 systems were upgraded to the level of CSS -2A. In 1987, Saudi Arabia procured by bypassing the Missile Technology Control Regime approximately 60 CSS -2A, and 15 associated transport and launch vehicles.

Technology

The entire system can be transported and transported on the roads. The missiles as well as all components are housed on trailer trains. For the launch preparations and create the fire readiness are needed 120-150 minutes. Both versions are single-stage liquid-propellant rockets. As fuel CSS -2 uses the storable liquid propellants UDMH and nitrogen tetroxide. The control of the CSS -2 by means of an inertial navigation platform. It achieves a precision (CEP ) of 1,000-2,000 m ( depending on version). Due to the relatively poor hit accuracy, the CSS -2 only against so-called " soft targets " such as population centers, industrial complexes, port facilities and railway junctions are used. U.S. and NATO experts estimate the CSS -2 as an effective second-strike weapon a little.

Status

The CSS -2 is now regarded as technically obsolete. In the People's Liberation Army 15-20 CSS- 2 systems currently discarded and replaced by the DF -21 and DF -25. About the status of the Saudi Arabian systems are no further details.
