Dora Riparia

The Dora Riparia is a 125 km long left tributary of the Po, in the Italian region of Piedmont. It has a catchment area of 1,231 km ².

Course

The river rises as Doire in the French part of the Cozie Alps, south east of the Col de Montgenevre, in the municipality of Montgenevre, Hautes -Alpes. On the Italian territory he takes the name Piccola Dora and after the confluence with the Ripa della valle Argentera mountain streams and Thuras di Busson near Cesana the Dora Riparia. After flowing through the Susa Valley and recording its largest tributary, the Dora di Bardonecchia at Oulx, and the mountain streams Galambra and Cenischia Susa shortly before it empties into the Po Valley.

Other small creeks and brooks on the way through the communes of Avigliana, Alpignano, Pianezza and Collegno are the Gravio di Condove the Sessi di Caprie and the Messa di Almese from the left, and the Scaglione di Meana and Gravio di Villarfocchiard of the right. Finally, the Dora Riparia opens in Turin as a left tributary of the Po.

History

At the point of confluence with the Po was in Roman times the city of Turin. The river is used for energy since the Middle Ages, its water was so called duriae, passed through channels and used among other things for the operation of mills.

During the Industrial Revolution, especially in the 20th century, the water quality has deteriorated dramatically. It was only in the 90s, an initiative on the restoration of the river has been launched.

In 2002, the landscape park Parco naturale della Dora Riparia agro- founded. Financed by the municipality Collegno and the Piedmont region is trying to strike a balance between demands of nature conservation and agriculture.
