Dorchester is a settlement on municipal Wi area ( Unincorporated community ) in Allamakee County in the northeast of the U.S. state of Iowa.
Dorchester is the only place in the 266 inhabitants Waterloo Township.
Geography
Dorchester is located at 43 ° 28'11 " north latitude and 91 ° 30'40 " west longitude. The place is located on Waterloo Creek, a tributary of the Upper Iowa River, which flows into the Mississippi River.
In Dorchester, the Allamakee County Road 16 meets the Iowa Highway 76
The border with Minnesota is 4.5 km to the north. The Mississippi River, which forms the border with Wisconsin flows, 28.7 km east of Dorchester. Neighboring towns are Eitzen in Minnesota (8.8 km north-east ), Bee in Minnesota (8 km north-west ) and New Albin (25 km east).
The nearest large towns are Iowa's capital Des Moines (351 km southwest), the Quad Cities (288 km south), Wisconsin's capital Madison (233 km east-southeast ) and Minnesota's largest city Minneapolis (284 km north-west ).
History
Although Dorchester is not a self- managed community, there is here since 21 May 1857 post office.
In August 2007, the town was destroyed by a flood. The record flooding in June 2008 led to the almost complete destruction of a trailer park, which accounted for a large part of the town.
